DOBUTAMINE STRESS ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY (DSE)

Dobutamine stress echocardiography is done if you are not able to do exercise. Dobutamine is put in a vein and because of that our heart works faster this test also determines how much your heart can tolerate.

Precautions should be taken on the day when the test is done

  • Don’t eat and drink anything except water at least for four hours.
  • Avoid products that contain caffeine like tea or coffee chocolates because it will interfere with the test results.
  • Avoid smoking on the day of the test.

The procedure of the test

This test is done in an echo lab the heart specialist will do a scan of your heart and rub 10 small areas on your chest and place electrodes on these areas the electrodes are connected to an electrocardiograph monitor that charts your heart’s electrical activity during the test. An intravenous line (IV) will be inserted into a vein in your arm, your heart will be “stressed” injecting a medication called dobutamine into the IV. It will also increase your heart rate.
